When you’re tired, unmotivated, and feeling lazy, one of the hardest things to do is get to gym. So what do you do? You grab your pre workout or pre workout snack and go. If you have a high tolerance to stimulants you’ve probably bounced between pre workouts. But, what if your favorite product gets reformulated? That’s when the team at Same Day Supplements break it down to the nitty gritty and tell you what to expect. Today we will be covering Dust X by Blackstone Labs versus the predecessor Dust Extreme.

Interested in Dust V2? We did a review here!

Section Divider: Dust Extreme Pre Workout

Dust Extreme Pre Workout:

Dust Extreme was the pre workout you need for those high intensity workout sessions. The formula gave laser like focus and an extreme energy boost. But because of the ongoing battles with DMAA and FDA, this formula had to change. Below we have the labels for both Dust Extreme and Dust X with the differences highlighted. From the labels you can see Dust Extreme had:

  • N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine
  • Higenamine
  • 1,3 Dimethylamylamine (DMAA)

Dust X VS Dust Extreme

Dust X Pre Workout:

First, as you can see, despite having different names, are almost identical. So for anyone who was looking for Dust Extreme, this is the same product with an updated formula. The new formula contains L-Tyrosine, Phenylethylamine, 2-aminoisoheptane, and Nelumbo necifera (actually Nelumbo Nucifera). The phenylethylamine is the only extra ingredient in this new formula. While the others are more of a swap.

l-tyrosine VS NAT DUST X

Tyrosine:

Starting from the top, you have the N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine and the replacement L-Tyrosine, which is an amino acid that can produce noradrenaline and dopamine. In addition to this, tyrosine also may help improve alertness, mood, and focus. (1)

So how do these forms compare?

It was believed that N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine may be more bioavailable than L-tyrosine. This could be due to it being more soluble in water. But this is not the case. N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine or NAT actually doesn’t convert to Tyrosine very well to begin with. Because the conversion rate is poor, L-Tyrosine would be the superior supplement. The only down side of L-Tyrosine is that it doesn’t dissolve as well. (2)

Phenylethylamine:

Phenylethylamine or PEA is a natural stimulant our bodies produce to serve several important functions. This alkaloid may have a wide range of uses including being a stimulant, improving mood, and cognitive performances.(3,4)

Nelumbo Nucifera:

In the formula, Nelumbo Nucifera is the replacement for the ingredient Higenamine. But, Nelumbo Nucifera is standardized for Higenamine, which means this ingredient is still in the formula but being sourced from Nelumbo Nucifera. So this isn’t a change in the formula, even the milligrams of the ingredient is the same.

So what does Higenamine do anyways?

Higenamine is often in fat burners due to its ability to kick start fat-breakdown. Because it’s considered a beta-receptor agonist, it’s often compared to Ephedrine and Synephrine. But, it’s chemical structure is pretty unique. Although in most fat burners you can expect vasoconstricting properties. This is due to them being stimulating, in Higenamine’s case we see the opposite. Higenamine actually shows properties of a vasodilator. Which leads to increased blood flow to the muscles. This can assist with promoting larger pumps and a better supply of nutrients to your muscles.(5)

DMAa vs dmha

2-Aminoisoheptane:

Finally, the last change and likely the one you already knew about, is the removal of DMAA. In stead of DMAA, Dust X has a similar ingredient 2-aminoisoheptane. In this formula you’re getting double the milligrams compared to the DMAA version. Like most ingredients 2-Aminoisoheptane can has a few names. Such as 2-amino-6-methylheptane and 2-amino-5-methylheptane. This ingredient often is considered a DMAA-like stimulant. This is simply because they are very similar in both chemical structure and function. They both can boost dopamine and noradrenaline uptake, while slowing down reuptake just long enough for a solid workout. (6)

Dust X Pre Workout Reviews:

Dust X Review By N/A: “I love this preworkout so much. It is strong af and gives me a workout like no other. The cucumber lime flavor is delicious and refreshing. I would also like to mention how happy I am with same day supplements. After trying to buy this product on other sites and getting scammed- same day supplements pulled through with great service! My order arrived within 24 hours. This website will be my go to from now on for supplements!” (Posted on

Dust X Review By Jonathan: “First time for me trying DMHA, and I have to say it’s pretty good. Not as strong as DMAA, but you can feel it ramping up your adrenaline levels, and the focus is still great. No aggression, however. But overall, the stimulant is a good replacement. The Pineapple Mango flavor has apparently been tweaked, you can taste more mango now and it’s sweeter. Never tasted a better supplement, so if you are a hardcore lifter, I encourage you to try this! Definitely not for beginners or less than serious fitness people though! (Posted on 4/22/2018)”

Dust Extreme Review By Phil Sousa: “First thing I can say is that this is a very strong pwo. It gives you alertness, focus, drive and also tingles. I tried the pineapple mango flavor and it is very good, just like a pineapple juice. This felt like a very strong pwo so I am not using it every day, I cycle it with another lighter one. Next time, I think I will try Dust v2, I like to trying different ones.” (Posted on 10/8/2017)

Section Divider: What Can You Expect

What Can You Expect?

Although there wasn’t very many changes to formula, the ones made could have a different feel. Based on the label we would expect the new formula to have a better focus aid than the previous one. Swapping out the DMAA is going to change the feel of the energy as well, but not in a bad way. The 2-aminoisoheptane is going to have more of a build up and come down effect.

Meaning you won’t get a crash, this formula will have a much smoother come-down compared to DMAA. We would still rate Dust X as a high stimulant pre workout. Definitely not something for beginners or for people with a low tolerance to stimulants. Besides the changed ingredients, you’re getting a great balance between the pump ingredients. So we would also expect to get a great pump throughout your workout as well.

Section Divider: Similar To Dust X

Similar To Dust X:

In this section, we’ll be going over some pre workouts that are similar to Dust X.

Dust X VS Dust Reloaded:

Dust X VS Dust Reloaded

Compared with Dust X Pre Workout, these pre workouts share ~5 ingredients:

  • L-Citrulline
  • Beta Alanine
  • Tyrosine
  • PEA
  • Caffeine

Shared Ingredients:

First, we have 1g of L-Citrulline Silicate compared to the 4g L-Citrulline Malate in Dust X. Unfortunately, there isn’t current research comparing these ingredients, so we can’t be sure if one is better than the other. However, the dosage being significantly less in Dust Reloaded could indicate this formula isn’t as optimized for performance.†

Following L-Citrulline, is Beta Alanine featured at 2g in Dust Reloaded compared to 2.5g in Dust X Pre Workout. Because these ingredients are fairly close dosage-wise, we would suspect a similar impact.†

Next, we have the L-tyrosine at 1g in Dust X compared to 150mg of NAT in Dust Reloaded. As we mentioned with Dust Extreme, NAT be more bioavailable than L-tyrosine, but the conversion rate is poor.† Then we have B-Phenylethylamine, which may be the same PEA alkaloid just written differently.†

Lastly, we have the Caffeine content. We can say Dust Reloaded is still a strong pre workout stim-wise, even without the DMHA. Dust Reloaded features 390mg of Caffeine per scoop compared to the 350mg in Dust X. With the addition of the 10mg DiCaffeine Malate, the energy complex can be long-lasting.†

Nitrosigine:

Nitrosigine is an inositol-stabilized, arginine silicate. Research indicates that it may promote the increase of arginine, silicon, and nitric oxide production. This can assist with improving endurance and may promote better recovery. Interestingly, research on Nitrosigine also is diving into cognitive function. Studies indicate it may aid in improving the ability to perform complex cognitive tests requiring mental flexibility, processing speed, and executive functioning.(7)

Taurine:

Our next ingredient, Taurine is dosed at 100 mg, which is a pretty low dose for this ingredient (clinical dose range .5-2 grams). L-Taurine is another amino acid, like citrulline, except it is a conditionally essential amino acid. Meaning, your body can produce this amino acid, but there are times you may need to supplement it. Taurine plays a role in many bodily functions like maintaining hydration, digestion, supporting central nervous system (CNS) functions, and even may aid in regulating your immune system.(8)

For the gym, Taurine may aid in protecting muscles from cell damage and oxidative stress, while also removing waste products that lead to muscle fatigue.(9)

DiCaffeine Malate:

DiCaffeine Malate is a buffered version of caffeine that has an extended half life. The benefit with DiCaffeine Malate is that the energy may be there longer and there is less of a “crash” when the stimulant wears off.†

 Betaine Anhydrous:

Betaine Anhydrous is similar to Citrulline in that it can help promote better pumps and endurance. It’s a naturally occurring amino acid coming from Beet Extract. This ingredient have a variety of benefits from anti-inflammatory properties to improving body composition and muscular performance. The ergogenic and clinical effects of betaine are often studied with doses ranging from 500 to 20,000 mg/day. But dosages of 2.5 g/day for at least 14 days to 6 weeks has shown potential to enhance strength-based performance. (10,11)

L-Norvaline:

L-Norvaline is a form of the amino acid L-Valine, which may aid in improving circulation and nitric oxide levels. This increase in circulation may assist with the pump and endurance-boosting effects from Dust Reloaded. (12)

Yohimbine HCL:

Yohimbine is a great thermogenic. There are a couple of ways yohimbine functions. The primary method is by blocking alpha-2 adrenergic receptors located in fat cells. Once Yohimbine has bound with a fat cell, it “turns off” the alpha receptor, which allows the fat cells to mobilize and burn off. But Yohimbine is also a mild stimulant. For a pre workout, you’ll get the benefits of a stimulant, and this ingredient may help you sweat more.(13)

Stearoyl Vanillylamide:

Stearoyl Vanillylamide is an analog of Capsaicin, a compound in various species of hot pepper that is primarily responsible for the spiciness. Like Capsaicin, Stearoyl Vanillylamide can help boost your metabolism and suppress your appetite while also providing some thermogenic effects.†

How To Take Dust Reloaded:

Blackstone Labs recommends mixing one (1) scoop in 8-10 oz. of water 30 minutes before workout on training days or first thing in the morning on non-training days. Due to extreme potency, new users may wish to assess tolerance with one half (1/2) scoop.

Dust Reloaded Review By Dragon:  “Ohhh maii gahd!! Best Preworkout I’ve had in so long! I love dust v2 but this is a big step up from that and so much more intense! The energy, the mental focus and clarity the part where you think you’re starting to die out on your workout session but then something kicks in and you have all the energy back! There’s a slight euphoric feeling I think is cuz I took a full scoop and Im petite (it’s strong but so good!)I definitely recommend it!”

Dust X VS BZRK:

Dust X VS BZRKBZRK shares six ingredients with Dust X:

  • L-Citrulline Malate
  • Beta Alanine (BetaO)
  • L-Tyrosine
  • Caffeine
  • Higenamine
  • Huperzine A

GlycerPump™:

GlycerPump™ or Glycerol Powder is a popular ingredient for pre workouts both stimulated and nonstimulant for its effect on aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance. Glycerol has several performance enhancing qualities. For starters, it can be used as an energy substrate, which contributes to the energy yield during exercise. Next, it has osmoprotective properties. This can help delay muscular fatigue. Lastly, when consumed with sufficient water, glycerol can play a role in maintaining hydration and thermoregulation. (14) Generally a dose between 2-5 grams is efficient for this ingredient.

However, this ingredient does come with an annoying consequence to being a hyperhydrating agent. Glycerol tends to increase the moisture drawn into powdered supplements. Meaning if not stored correctly, these products tend to have more clumps or get harden. While the clumping is generally easy to break apart and won’t affect the performance of the product, it can be annoying. We recommend for products with high contents of glycerol and other hydrating/pumping ingredients (e.g., creatine, citrulline, betaine, etc.) to be stored in the refrigerator or another cool, dry area to reduce the risk of clumping.

N-Isopropylnorsynephrine:

Isopropylnorsynephrine is another intense stimulant in this pre workout. It’s also known as Octopamine and is an alkaloid found alongside Synephrine in Citrus Aurantium. Aside from boosting energy, octopamine may aid in promoting fat burning by inhibiting the uptake of glucose in fat cells (adipocytes) by blocking the beta-3 adrenoceptor. (15)

Kola Nut Extract:

Kola Nut Extract is a natural central nervous system stimulant, which s often standardized for Caffeine. This stimulant may increase alertness and boost energy levels.†

N-Methyl Tyramine:

Next, we have N-Methyl Tyramine HCl or NMT, and this ingredient is the opposite of a fat burner ingredient. Research shows NMT can stimulate appetite and the absorption of fats and carbohydrates but inhibit the breakdown of fats into energy. So it may contribute to weight gain rather than weight loss. But, the increase in nutrient absorption may boost the perception of wakefulness. (16)

Coffee Arabica Extract:

This extract contains chlorogenic acids and caffeine, which may aid in weight loss (17). However, the energy may have more of a natural energy boost feel, rather than the energy boost you feel from a cup of coffee.†

How To Take BZRK:

The manufacturers recommend mixing one (1) scoop with 6-8oz of water and consume 15-20 minutes prior to training. To avoid sleeplessness, do not use within 6 hours prior to sleep.

Do not consume more than 1 scoop in any 24 hour period. NOTE: New users may wish to assess tolerance with 1/2 scoop.

BZRK Review By Shane: “This is by far the strongest pre workout I have had. Plus the pumps and focus are great too.”

Dust X VS Ape Sh*t Pre Workout:

Dust X VS Ape shitCompared to Dust X, Ape Sh*t shares five ingredients:

  • L-Citrulline
  • Beta Alanine
  • Agmatine Sulfate
  • Caffeine
  • Huperzine A (Toothed Clubmoss A)

And also shares three ingredients with Dust Reloaded:

  • L-Taurine
  • Yohimbe Extract
  • DiCaffeine Malate

Choline Bitartrate:

There may be several of benefits of Choline, but what it’s most recognized for is it’s role in cell structure, messaging, fat transport and metabolism, and DNA synthesis and nervous system maintenance. What this translates to is improved brain functions like memory and focus (18).

Caffeine Citrate:

Caffeine Citrate is the fastest acting caffeine available, which makes it very popular in supplements. Whereas Caffeine Anhydrous is the purest form of caffeine available.†

How To Take Ape Sh*t:

The manufacturers recommend mixing 1-2 scoops with 8-10oz of water 15-20 minutes prior to training.

Ape Sh*t Review By Daniel: “is my go to before morning gym. mostly do full body workout. 2hr then at night gym time another 1.5 hr. still so pump. take 1 scoop before gym”
